- How To Know Your Skin Type | Weirdskin
Taking care of your skin is not only about it being perfect. It is also a way of connecting and finding yourself. Studies have proven that beauty has an impact on our personalities as we all have different perceptions of what it is. Embracing the versions of beauty, we represent is important in accepting who we are and living life to the fullest. Now, who has never dreamt of having perfect skin? It’s obvious, we all do but while great skin is a matter of DNA for some people, for others it’s not that simple. Factors ranging from what we eat to the number of hours we sleep impact our skin. This implies that getting a suitable skincare routine is vital to maintaining the health of our skin. Have you ever wondered why you use a particular product that everybody swears by but it doesn’t work? I think we all have been in that situation before. In most cases, the first reason will be that the product wasn’t suitable for your skin type. Knowing your skin type will help you figure out what products best suit you and help establish your perfect skin routine. There exist four skin types; Normal, Dry, Oily, and Combination/mixed skin. Let’s figure out which group you belong to. NORMAL SKIN TYPE This skin type is characterized by the fact that the skin produces enough sebum (natural oil produced by the body) to hydrate itself. People in this category have skins with normal pore sizes which properly regulate the production of oil by the skin. Normal skin is generally evenly toned and shows fewer wrinkles than other skin types. This skin type is less likely prone to reactions but this does not imply it is a perfect skin type. If you belong to this category you may suffer from the appearance of blemishes or other skin issues from time to time. Do not forget that our skin morphs with age, climate change, and hormonal imbalances. This means that, though this skin type tends to be the least problematic, having an appropriate skincare routine is necessary to maintain this balance over time. Avoid products that may cause excessive dryness or that are too greasy. DRY SKIN TYPE Usually flaky and quite tight, this skin type looks dull and reflects light in different directions compared to normal skin which is smooth and clearer. Unlike what you may think, this dryness isn’t because your skin doesn’t hydrate itself properly. On the contrary, dry skins tend to have the same hydration levels as oily skins. Dry skin can be caused by several factors as; a hereditary predisposition, high levels of sun exposure, hormonal imbalances, over-exfoliation, or very hot baths. If you belong to this group, the choice of your body moisturizer is very important, and also choosing the right sunscreen . Hydration both day and night is the key element your lock for when picking your moisturizer. One good one for the face is The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors . Prioritize heavier creams with higher oil content over lotions. The older we get the more the skin dries out, therefore, avoid very hot baths and harsh detergents as this skin type is also slightly allergic. Maintaining a regular skincare routine is vital to achieving healthy skin. OILY SKIN TYPE Your skin is oily if you notice an excessive shine present on your face throughout the day. People with this skin type have large pores which favor the excessive production of sebum on the face. This is the acne-prone skin type by excellence. Whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples are all issues people with oily skin face due to excess sebum production which blocks pores. Most dermatologists recommend using products that contain salicylic acid which gently exfoliates the skin and allows it to unclog pores and get rid of dead skin cells as well as debris without excessive drying it out. Many people think that having oily skin means you should not use the wrong moisturizer. When your skin is left dry, it will tend to produce even more oil to replace the deficiency. Therefore, when picking a moisturizer aim for gels over creams and lotions. Harsh exfoliators too should be avoided as they dry up the skin which will prompt further excessive production of oil. COMBINATION SKIN TYPE Also known as mixed skin type, this refers to skins that combine aspects of at least two or more of the other skin types. People in this group tend to experience excess oiliness on the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) while areas around the mouth and cheeks are dry and flaky. This skin type could be caused by seasonal changes. Some people may witness a change in skin texture based on the climate, with their skin getting dry in the cold seasons and oily in the warm seasons. You need to avoid drying out your face because this will increase sensitivity to the dry areas while increasing oil production in the oily areas. What will work best for you is to have a specific moisturizer for each part of your face and not mix them up. Favor lotions when picking your skincare products. Your skin will love exfoliation as the dry parts will be stripped of the dead skin cells while the pores on the oily parts of your face will be unclogged and cleared of the dead skin cells that cause dulling. SENSITIVE SKIN Unlike what most people think sensitive skin is not a skin type but a skin condition. This implies that it is a state of skin that can change over time with the use of the right skin products or treatments. Your skin will be considered sensitive if it is prone to quick reactions to skincare products and is often characterized by a high inflammatory rate. People with this skin condition experience redness and irritation when using products that contain fragrance or essential oils . Also, you will find it hard to use strong actives like exfoliants and retinol which means you need to take extra care when selecting your products. If you fall under this category you should avoid long exposures to the sun, a high percentage of chemical exfoliants, and harsh chemical-based products (sulfates in cleansers). Dealing with sensitive skin is very tricky as this skin condition will make you prone to overreactions to a lot of skincare ingredients that may work for all other skin types. It is, therefore, best for you to always see your dermatologist for the best possible advice when it comes to skin treatments. In some cases, sensitive skin can occur due to medical skin conditions such as allergies. It is advisable to use gentle and anti-inflammatory products to help soothe your skin. For all of these skin types, there is one thing they all have in common. Which is reducing wrinkles and aging. I recently used the Depology Argireline Serum , which is formulated for anti-aging and combatting fine lines. Now that we have gone through the 4 skin types that exist, I hope you can figure out where you belong. The next step in our beauty journey is defining the perfect skincare routine for you . #skintype #dryskin #oilyskin #combinationskin #sensitiveskin #normalskin
- The Essential Skincare Ritual
[the 3 ultimate steps you should not miss in your skincare routine] Now that you are capable of identifying your skin type , how will this help you build up your perfect skincare routine? While there may be different skincare products out there, you will not necessarily need all of them, or at least not all the time. Therefore, knowing your skin type helps figure out what is good for you. A proper skincare routine consists of 3 main steps: Cleansing, Moisturizing, and Sun protection. Turning these 3 steps into a ritual will be essential to attaining your goal of having good skin . Cleansing This means washing your face. Contrary to popular belief, washing your face with water and soap is not enough to strip it of all the dirt and pollutants it encounters during the day. Using the right cleanser avoids having your pores clogged, reduces the dulling of your skin, and lessens your chances of developing acne. Using a cleanser permits you to clean your skin without affecting the healthy oils it needs to stay healthy. The formula of your cleanser, of course, will be determined by your skin type. For oily skin , using foaming liquid cleansers is the solution. When in contact with water, the cleanser will form light and soft foam which will easily penetrate the skin and liberate the pores of the excess oil present. For dry skin , picking a cleanser in the form of a lotion or cream is ideal. Look out for formulas that contain emollients such as glycerin and shea butter which deeply clear and hydrate the skin. People with sensitive skin should go for oils as cleansers. Lightweight oils such as argan oil are perfect for you. Stay clear of harsh chemical-based products or heavy formulas that may cause irritations or clog your pores. For older skin, balms that melt easily such as body butter are recommended for you. The light and fluffy texture of body butter will easily slide makeup off. In case you find difficulties in finding a formula strictly for your skin type do not panic. Micellar water works as a cleanser for any skin type. It is a soap-free solution that acts as a magnet when applied to the skin and attracts all the dirt and oil present on the face. As a bonus, you do not need to rinse it off. Other cleansers are very effective in cleansing makeup. The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser is one of them. It works for all skin types, is soap-free, and leaves the skin feeling smooth and moisturized. Moisturizing This step is my personal favorite. The moisturizer's role is to hydrate and soften the skin. Picking the right moisturizer for your skin is like picking the right shoe to match your dress. Our skins need constant nourishment, reasons why the moisturizer is used daily after the bath. The texture of your moisturizer will entirely depend on your skin type. Two of my favorite moisturizers are The Ordinary's Natural Moisturizing Factors and e.l.f Holy Hydration Face Cream . Here’s a table that outlines what moisturizer matches its skin type and why. Sun Protection Wearing sunscreen is a must to keep your skin well protected from external aggressions, sunburns, and free radical damage caused by UV rays. Sun rays usually cause damage to skin cells and expose our skin to infections and chronic skin disorders such as cancer, acne , and hyperpigmentation . These rays are equally the number 1 reason for premature skin aging. Over the years this step has been ignored especially by people with black skin who have melanin in the skin which offers protection. This is true. The production of melanin in the skin is triggered as the skin's response to protect itself from UV rays. However, this only offers a short-lived level of production and leads to severe hyperpigmentation the more we get exposed. Adding sunscreen to your routine will help reduce the stress on your skin to protect itself, by absorbing UV rays and deflecting them so they do not penetrate the skin and cause damage. By forming a protective barrier on your skin, sunscreen helps even your skin tone and reduces hyperpigmentation, and lots of formulas contain hydrating and soothing elements that prevent other sunburns and other skin inflammations. Choosing the perfect sunscreen will go. along the way to better our skin's condition. Following this essential skincare routine will take you a step closer to getting that clear skin you want. For example, there are some great anti-aging products such as the Depology Argireline Serum , which you can add to your routine down the line. In case you find all this information quite daunting to remember do not worry. Quite often, skincare brands label their products according to skin types. Of course, if you wish, you could always spice up your routine with serums, masks, scrubs, peel-offs, etc. I am here to show you just how.
- How To Adapt Your Skincare Routine To Dry Seasons | Weirdskin
If you live in tropical areas then you will be familiar with the very hot sun and dry winds of the Harmattan. This period is particularly the harshest period for the skin as the air becomes dusty and very dry, not to mention the scorching sun that shines from 9 a.m. to at least 4 p.m. It, therefore, is super important to adapt your skincare routine during this period to avoid regular breakouts, dehydration, and sunburns. This is also valid for those living in the northern hemisphere where the winter months equally dry out the skin. In today’s article, you’ll learn 3 simple ways to protect your skin and sustain its natural glow! Switch To a Thicker Moisturizer and/or Healing Ointment Chances are your regular moisturizer may not be thick enough to protect your skin from transepidermal water loss throughout the dry season. Remember during this period your skin is losing water day and night due to high temperatures and a very dry atmosphere. As such you will need a creamy textured moisturizer to seal off moisture better. This is not only recommended for people with dry skin but for all skin types. Yes, even with oily skin , a good example is the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat Oil-Free Mattifying Moisturizer . I have tried out the Natural Moisturizing Factors from The Ordinary . That is one hell of a good facial moisturizer very suitable for dry seasons. If you do not feel comfortable using creamy moisturizers, you could reinforce your routine by applying a healing ointment or vaseline after your lightweight moisturizer. Yes, you read me right Vaseline just like healing ointments is a skin protectant made with refined petroleum jelly. They form an occlusive barrier on the skin and slow down the loss of moisture as well as trap all actives layered before enhancing their penetration. The dry season is also the ideal time to take out your facial oils. Although not thick facial oils will help nourish your skin at night and repair any damage caused during the day by the sun. Include a Face Mist in Your Routine Face mist in my opinion just like essences is one of the most underrated skincare products despite its benefits to keeping the skin hydrated. If you know me, you know my motto for healthy skin is hydration. Face mists are water-based products that deliver an instant boost of hydration to the skin. They are formulated to soothe the skin and calm down irritations, sunburns, and inflammations on the skin. Spraying this product in between the steps of your routine helps hydrate but also enhances the penetration of our products. Remember you can always reply throughout the day whenever you feel your is dry or feels irritated. If you want to try this out check out the Thermal Spring Water mist by AVENE . The great thing is that it is readily available in multiple pharmacies. Switch to Hydrating Natural Soaps It's been 2 years since I made the switch to natural soaps and it has been one of the most determining decisions I've ever made to improve my skin’s health. Why? Well unlike most bathing gels and bar soaps you are used to, natural soaps have hydrating and moisturizing properties. Most soaps sold on the market are made with harsh sulfate-based detergents like Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauryl sulfate that tend to be too harsh on the skin. These are synthetic cleansers that strip off dirt as well as all the natural oil present on your skin necessary to maintain the skin’s barrier. This is what causes the tight feeling you experience after taking a bath. Natural soaps on the other hand are made with nourishing natural plant oils that are gentle on the skin with fatty acid profiles similar to those present on the skin. Natural soaps are equally superfatted. This means that after rinsing of foam from these soaps a thin layer of oil remains on your skin to trap in some moisture gotten from water during your shower. A good example is the @weirdskins TURMERIC x CITRONELLA CLEANSING BAR . Product Recommendations to Adapt Your Skincare Routine To Dry Seasons Cerave Healing Ointment This rich healing ointment contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid that help protect and soothe dry, cracked, and chafed skin. This is ideal for barrier repair during the Harmattan cold nights. By far my favorite healing ointment. Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream This repair cream has similar ingredients as the Cerave healing ointment and is a great substitute. Its focus is barrier repair and this cream contains ceramides as well as amino acids which will help rebuild the skin's building block for plump and well-nourished skin during the dry season. FAQs Should Your Skincare Routine Change With Seasons? Absolutely! You need to adapt your skincare routine when the climate changes because climate changes also cause changes to the skin. What Should I Add To My Skincare Routine During The Dry Season? During the dry season, hydration should be your priority and this is the best time to invest in hydrating toners, face mists, or essences. Also, switch to thicker moisturizers as temperatures at night then to be colder. How Do You Moisturize Your Face In A Dry Climate? In a dry and humid climate switch to a lightweight moisturizer with hyaluronic acid. However, in dry and cold climates switch to thicker creams that contain peptides and ceramides. What Serums Are Good For Dry Climates? Hydrating serums that also contain barrier-strengthening ingredients like niacinamide, panthenol, oatmeal, peptides or hyaluronic acid can help keep your skin healthy during the dry season.

There’s nothing more to enjoying quality sex and intimacy than a relaxed mind. Getting the skin benefits from using aromatherapy to spice up your sex life is the cherry on the top. How Does it Work? I know at this point you must think all of this is far-fetched but there is a science behind all these claims. The aromatic compounds found in essential oils first interact with our olfactory system and almost immediately the brain. The amygdala is the emotional center of the brain, while the hippocampus plays an essential role in the formation of new memories about past experiences. In the brain, the hypothalamus is directly related to hormone control and it regulates sex drive, energy levels, and production of hormones. Simply put, once you inhale an essential oil, its scent hits the olfactory membrane responsible for the perception of smell which is then relayed to the behavioral and emotional part of the brain. Essential oils will impact the hypothalamus in different ways, in our case today we’re looking for romance and excitement! Essential Oils For Romantic Massage The most common way you can use essential oils for more heated intimate sessions is for massage. Here’s how to go about it! Start with a foot massage. Make sure to focus on the heel, most especially the middle section just under the ball of the foot, and the inside of the ankle. This is where the reflexology points are for our reproductive organs! Then move up to a back massage with emphasis on the lower back on the sacrum area. This will arouse them. Push their arousal further slide down the inner thigh and just gently massage them in slow and circular motions. These oils can be a source of great pleasure but the dosage in which they are used should be respected. A few drops are all you need. Essential oils are very potent plant extracts. To avoid skin irritations, make sure to test out the oil on a patch of your skin before applying it all over your body. For example, someone who is anxious before having sex will need a different essential oil than someone who is tired and needs an energy boost. I have compiled a list of the 6 most used essential oils and how they work to soothe or heighten your emotions. Clary Sage If you want to get creative in the bedroom clary sage essential oil is definitely what you should go for. This oil is a powerful aphrodisiac that boosts creativity by maintaining your focus and paving the way for more inspirational thoughts and sexual adventures. Patchouli Though not everyone loves the scent of patchouli oil, it helps uplift the mood. It relieves stress-related tension and will do away with the feeling of anxiety. Patchouli promotes a great sense of well-being and also reduces nervous tension and frigidity. Use this oil before a love-making session to just calm your mind so you can focus on bringing pleasure to your partner. Jasmine This flower is considered to be the flower of romance. Its essential oil when inhaled causes feelings of euphoria, confidence, and optimism. If you are a shy person and you want to act and feel sexier for your partner this should be your pick. Jasmine oil also helps to get rid of feelings such as apathy, listlessness, or indifference. If you're looking to re-ignite the passion then you need Jasmine in your life. Neroli or Sweet Orange Oil It increases sexual desire and reduces blood pressure in women especially when libido is low due to hormonal imbalance or stress. If you are on birth control which affects your libido, get your partner to massage you with some of this oil to get things going. I take a bath every evening with some Castille soap (which I make myself) scented with sweet orange essential oil and this helps calm me down and takes away the stress from the day. When it comes to intimacy there is a large array of essential oils to choose from. The list above is not exhaustive but it serves as a starting point for you. FAQs Can Aromatherapy Oils Be Used On the Skin? Essential oils can be used on the skin but should be diluted in carrier oils of plant oils like sunflower oil. Using too much of an essential oil directly on the skin could lead to irritation. Where to Buy Aromatherapy Oils? Depending on where you find yourself you can find aromatherapy oils in your local beauty stores, or shop online on websites like Amazon. How Does Aromatherapy Reduce Stress? Aromatherapy utilizes natural plant extracts, especially essential oils, to promote emotional and physical well-being. When inhaled, these oils can impact our limbic system, influencing emotions and physiological functions. Some oils have direct chemical effects that induce calm, while others promote sleep or stimulate feel-good neurotransmitters. The act of focusing on the aroma can foster mindfulness, and when combined with practices like massage, aromatherapy enhances relaxation. However, individual responses vary, and it's crucial to use high-quality oils safely, considering potential allergies and ensuring proper dilution.
- How To Choose The Right Sunscreen | Weirdskin
Sunscreen is a skincare product that over the years has been sidelined due to a lot of misinformation surrounding it. From stories of it causing cancer to not being necessary for black skin, I have heard it all. However, this is one of, if not the most essential step in a skincare routine and I love the fact that modern estheticians have contributed a lot to debunk this narrative. There are a lot of reasons why you should wear sunscreen regularly. In this article, I will lay down everything you need to know about sunscreen. the why, how, when, and how often? All your questions will be answered. What is Sunscreen? Sunscreen is a substance that protects the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays by either reflecting, absorbing, or scattering UVA and UVB rays. Also called sunblock, suntan, or sun cream, it is usually formulated in the form of lotions, creams, gels, sticks, sprays, and powders. UVA Rays vs. UVB Rays Understanding the importance is sunscreen for your skin starts by knowing the different ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun that harm the skin. Two types of harmful UV rays affect the skin. UVA and UVB UVA rays are those sun rays that penetrate deep into the skin causing premature aging of skin cells. These rays cause the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This process is referred to as photoaging. These rays equally play a role in the formation of skin cancer. UVB rays on the other hand are responsible for causing sunburns when skin is exposed to the sun and are largely responsible for causing skin cancer , particularly malignant melanoma (deadly black mole). It should be noted that 95% of the sun rays that reach the earth are UVA while the remaining 5% are UVB. Because UVA rays have a shorter length and carry lesser energy, they cause indirect damage to cell DNA. On the other hand, UVB rays are longer and stronger and cause direct damage to cell DNA resulting in sunburns and most forms of skin cancer. How To Choose The Right Sunscreen For Your Skin Type Sensitive Skin Go for a mineral sunscreen. these are less irritant than chemical sunscreens. Make sure you pick a product that is fragrance and alcohol-free. Lookout for, ingredients such as panthenol, allantoin, and madecassoside. They have soothing properties and can help to limit irritation on sensitive skin . The Ordinary Mineral UV Filter SPF 30 with Antioxidants Oily Skin For oily skin stick to lightweight sunscreens that are not greasy, lightweight, and absorb quickly leaving no white cast. Normal Skin If you belong to this category, no need to worry much. Whether physical or chemical sunscreens you are free to pick any. It all boils down to your preference in terms of say texture and convenience. One I will recommend for you is the Sun Bum Face 50 Sunscreen Face Lotion Acne-prone Skin For this skin type, avoiding chemical sunscreens that may worsen already existing inflammation is recommended making mineral sunscreen a safer option, however, this is not a given as some chemical sunscreens may contain soothing ingredients. Whatever you choose stick to lightweight or water-based formulas for acne-prone skin . Elta MD UV Clear Facial Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum SPF 46 No matter your skin type , it might take some trial and error to find the perfect match for you. However, here is what to look for ideally when choosing your sunscreen Broad-spectrum SPF 30 and above Water-resistant and very water-resistant Why You Need to Wear Sunscreen Whether you are suffering from any skin condition or not, using sunscreen is a must, and here is why. Prevents Skin Cancer Overexposure to the sun's UV radiation is the predominant reason for the development of skin cancer. The three major types of skin cancer — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are all caused by exposure to the sun. They most often develop in the areas of the body exposed to sunlight. Applying sunscreen regularly forms a protective barrier against these harmful radiations and reduces the risk of having any of these cancers. Prevents Premature Aging The external factors that cause the skin's premature aging include chronic exposure to the sun’s radiation, pollution, chemicals, and other environmental factors. UV rays break down collagen and elastin which the skin needs to maintain its elasticity and firmness. This leads to the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. These harmful rays equally destroy melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) causing hyperpigmentation. Applying sunscreen, therefore, helps to maintain youthful and brighter skin. Prevents Sunburn and Skin Inflammations Sunburn is caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight and causes exposed areas of the body to become inflamed, red, and painful to the touch. In severe cases, sunburn can cause blisters on the skin. Because UV rays destroy immune-protecting melanocytes, the skin becomes more prone to infections, free radical damage, and irritations. Wearing sunscreen helps prevent all of this by forming a protective barrier on the skin. Sunscreen does not only serve as a sunblock but also as a moisturizer to cool down the skin when under the sun. A lot of sunscreens are formulated with hydrating, soothing, and moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, Aloe Vera, glycerin, panthenol, etc. to ensure the health of the skin's moisture barrier. Prevents Sun-Sensitivity For people dealing with sun-sensitive conditions, such as sensitive skin, lupus, and rosacea, wearing sunscreen is a real lifesaver. Wearing sunscreen regularly reduces exposure to UV rays that can lead to redness and burning in the skin and the overall severity of these conditions. It equally is an important step of a skincare routine, especially when using chemical exfoliants (AHAs and BHAs) that increase sun sensitivity. Types of Sunscreen Continuous exposure to ultraviolet radiation throughout one's lifetime can lead to the development of skin cancer and weaken the skin's immune system. But also, these may account for frequent breakouts, and rapid skin aging as UV derails the proper function of the skin’s barrier. Everyone needs to wear sunscreen, but you should keep in mind that all sunscreens are not the same. They vary in formulation, texture, and periods of coverage. Also, based on your lifestyle, and skin type sun protection needs may differ. To choose the right sunscreen, you need to first understand how they function. There are two types of sunscreens; mineral sunscreen (physical sunscreen/sunblock) and chemical sunscreen. Each of them functions in different ways to protect against UV rays ; Mineral Sunscreen Also called physical sunscreen, this type of sunscreen uses one of two inorganic minerals to offer protection - zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. When applied to the skin they form a protective film that deflects UVA and UVB rays away from the surface of the skin. They tend to have a thicker consistency which allows them to sit on the skin. Mineral sunscreens do not get absorbed beneath the epidermis and work immediately after application. This type of sunscreen is great for sensitive and acne-prone skin as both minerals are not irritant and non-comedogenic as opposed to some chemical sunscreens. Chemical Sunscreen When applied to the skin, chemical sunscreens penetrate the top layer of the skin and act in two ways. On one hand, they scatter 5-10% of the UV rays before they cause damage to the skin. And on the other hand filter UV rays and convert them into heat thus neutralizing them. They contain organic ingredients such as avobenzone, oxybenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. Chemical sunscreens usually have a lighter texture, are easily absorbed by the skin, and are less likely to leave a white cast on the skin as compared to physical sunscreen. They are effective at protecting against both UVA and UVB rays and can be formulated with other compounds that increase antioxidant protection. Essentially the best sunscreen is the one that works best for you be it physical or chemical. Both options offer the protection you need however each type comes with pros and cons you might want to be familiar with before making your choice. Differences Between Mineral and Chemical Sunscreen Mineral Sunscreen Chemical Sunscreen Texture: It is thick and sits on the skin. Texture: It is lightweight and absorbs into the skin faster Skin type: Best for sensitive and acne-prone skin. But all skin types are still suitable. Skin type: Works for all. FAQs About Sunscreen When Should I Apply Sunscreen? Apply your sunscreen daily 15 - 20 minutes before stepping out of your home or before starting your daily activities indoors. How Much Sunscreen Should I Apply? For maximum protection apply an ounce or the equivalent of a shot glass to your whole body. For your face and neck only apply two fingers' worth of sunscreen, the equivalent of 1/4 of a teaspoon at each application. What Does SPF Mean? SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how effectively sunscreen shields against UVB rays. For example, SPF 30 means sunburn occurs 30 times slower than without sunscreen. Experts recommend SPF 30 to 50 for optimal protection, with SPF 30 blocking 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocking 98%. Higher SPFs offer marginally more coverage. Regardless of SPF level, reapplication every 2 hours ensures maximum protection. What SPF is Recommended When Selecting Sunscreen? For the best coverage, the SPF value recommended is at least SPF 30. Anything below that will not be effective enough to protect you adequately. What SPF is Best? Although sun protection factor (SPF) is not the only metric to determine the effectiveness of sunscreen, choosing a high SPF value is still a recommendation for maximum protection. The “best” SPF you should go for is a sunscreen with SPF 50. What Does Broad Spectrum Mean? When selecting your sunscreen, make sure to pick one that is labeled as broad-spectrum. This means it will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. What Sunblock is the Best? At the end of the day, there is no best sunscreen except for the one your skin will tolerate. Because of how complex sunblock formulations are, they may have different effects on various individuals. Whether chemical or mineral, lotion, stick or spray it doesn’t matter so long as your sunscreen is at least SPF 30 and offers broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. How Often Should I Reapply Sunscreen? Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every 2 hours whether indoors or not on all parts of the body exposed to sunlight. Reapply immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Who Needs To Wear Sunscreen? Everyone exposed to the sun needs to wear sunscreen including men, women, and children above 6 months. This is all skin tones and skin types included. A baby under 6 months has very sensitive skin that may react to sunscreen. Staying out of the sun; under-shaded structures and sun-protective clothing are the best ways to safeguard infants. Water-resistant Sunscreen vs. Very Water-resistant Water-resistant sunscreen can last up to 40mins in the water while very water-resistant sunscreen can last up to 80mins in water.
- Depology's Argireline Serum and Micro Dart Patches | Weirdskin
Having dry skin implies constantly struggling with texture, flakiness, fine lines, wrinkles, and transepidermal water loss. This is why I am a huge fan of Korean skincare products because they tend to focus on skin hydration, barrier repair, and signs of aging. I recently discovered an innovative South Korean skincare brand called Depology which develops really advanced formulations to target these concerns and naturally couldn't pass up the chance to try two of their star products the Depology Peptide Complex 10% Serum formulated with ArgirelineTM peptide and the Depology Deepcare+ Serum-Infused Micro Dart Patches Note that while these products were gifted to me by the brand, this review reflects my true opinion based on my experience using them. What is the Depology Peptide Complex 10% Serum? The Depology Peptide Complex Anti-wrinkle or the Depology Argireline serum is a product designed to prevent and reduce signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines on the skin. Unlike other anti-aging serums, this innovative formula prevents muscular movements in the face that cause the formation of wrinkles on the skin. To be honest, I had never heard of a skincare product being able to do that which got me really intrigued. This serum‘s star ingredient is Argireline™ , an amino acid that has the ability to relax facial muscles and thus prevent wrinkle creasings from forming on the skin. Added to this, this serum also contains hydrating and antioxidant properties for plump and radiant skin. Depology Peptide Complex 10%: Ingredient List Explained Below is a breakdown of the main active ingredients found in this serum and how they benefit the skin. Argireline™ 10% Argireline™ also known as peptide acetyl hexapeptide-3 is a synthetic peptide, that has various anti-wrinkle and anti-aging properties. Unlike other peptides, Argireline™ has the ability to disrupt muscle communication, this prevents the movements of muscles in the skin responsible for dynamic or expression wrinkles i.e. forehead creasing, cross feet, or fine lines around the mouth. This peptide is known to deliver anti-aging results close to that of Botulinum Toxin, promotes collagen production for smooth skin, and improves moisture in the skin. Vita-Polypeptide This is an advanced form of Vitamin C made from the combination of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and a polypeptide. This blend provides antioxidant benefits to the skin by reducing free radical damage. It also provides anti-aging benefits as Vitamin C is known to boost collagen production in the skin. Fig Fruit Extract This fruit extract is used in skincare for its ability to enhance the skin’s hydration levels. It also has antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from external aggressions and remastered aging. Roman Chamomille Oil This plant is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. It helps soothe irritated skin and has a significant content of antioxidant compounds that prevent free radical damage to the skin, and speed skin cell renewal which slows down signs of aging. Vitamin E Vitamin is a potent antioxidant that targets signs of premature aging. In addition to this, it helps with skin hydration and also has anti-inflammatory benefits for the skin. Centella Asiatica Also known as cica, this plant active is very popular in K-beauty products. Centella asiatica is one of the most versatile actives used in cosmetics and its benefits range from soothing, and hydrating to strong antioxidants capable of preventing skin aging caused by free radicals and UV exposure. Heartleaf Extract Heart leaf extract has been used for centuries in both Korean and Chinese traditional medicine before becoming popular in skincare. This active is known to be a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from aggressions and fights signs of skin aging. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that contribute to maintaining skin health. My Experience with the Depology Argireline™ Peptide Serum I received the Argireline™ peptide serum at a point where my skin barrier was impaired which was kind of ideal for me. Peptides are great for skin barrier repair as they rebuild the skin’s lipid layers. Prior to use my skin was very dry, bumpy, dull, and felt very irritated. I used this serum twice a day alongside a gentle cleanser and a soothing moisturizer. The serum was very light on my skin and absorbed very fast without irritating my already sensitive skin. 3 drops were enough to cover my face and the first thing I noticed was how hydrating this serum is. After 2 weeks of use my skin was significantly more plump, and my and its texture was smoother. Did my wrinkles go away? Well, 2 weeks is too short for an honest response but the improvement in my skin’s plumpiness is a sign that over time this serum will deliver even better results. The Depology Deepcare+ Serum-Infused Micro Dart Patches Of the two products I received, the Depology Micro Dart under eye patches is what piqued my interest the most. Imagine the combination of an eye mask and micro-needles. These eye patches unlike silicon and hydrogel eye patches are not covered in serum. The part that comes in contact with the under eye area has tiny micro darts that just like micro needles cause micro injuries to the skin. This, in turn, triggers the skin’s healing process while infusing the skin with anti-aging actives like hyaluronic acid, Argireline, various amino acids, and trehalose. The result guaranteed is more hydrated, glowing, and plumper skin. In addition to this delivery through micro darts has other benefits on the skin such as improving skin texture, and scars, brightening, and evening the skin tone. Star Ingredients in the Depology Deepcare+ Serum-Infused Micro Dart Patches Hyaluronic Acid Hyaluronic acid is a strong humectant that draws moisture in the skin and binds water to collagen for more plump, and hydrated skin. This action helps prevent and get rid of wrinkles and fine lines. This humectant is infused into the skin via microneedles and helps boost collagen in the skin. Amino Acids Amino acids make the building block of the skin’s matrix and are necessary for various skin functions such as collagen production, and water retention. Peptides The Depology micro-needling eye patches contain a blend of peptides (Argireline™, Lysine Polypeptide, Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4) that boost collagen production, increase skin water retention, and result in firmer and more plump skin. This is ideal for people with crow's feet around the eyes, dark circles, and expression wrinkles. Adenosine Adenosine is an anti-wrinkle agent that has the ability to boost collagen production by stimulating the formation of fibroblasts (cells that secrete collagen in the skin) which helps improve the appearance of wrinkles. Trehalose Trehalose is a sugar that has both moisturizing and antioxidant properties. It is used in skincare for its capacity to reduce stress on skin caused by UV exposure and free radicals which are the principal cause of skin aging. My Experience with the Depology Deepcare+ Serum Micro Dart Patches Using these eye patches felt like receiving a home microneedling session and at first was jarring but I loved it I was gifted with two packs of 4 pairs each (i.e. 16 patches) and at the time of this review I have used 4 pairs. The directions require applying the patches on clean and dry skin for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight for best results every 2-3 days. I wore them for both 2hrs and overnight and was so surprised at how the glue on this stuff holds. it literally griped to my skin and stayed on for a full night which is very impressive. After wearing the patches I lightly pressed the area with the micro darts into my skin which was not painful at all. After taking them off, my under-eye area did feel more hydrated than the rest of my skin and slightly more plump. Honestly, this was faster than most eye creams I have used in the best and a million times less messy than regular hydrogen eye masks. See pictures. Although the pictures attached above of the results do not show a drastic change, I promise you it did improve the firmness of my under eye area which appeared plumper (you see my under eyes are less sunken in the second picture) and I am sure but the time I’ll be done with the 8 pairs my under eye area will definitely look better (so stick around for an update in a few weeks). Final Thoughts Honestly discovering the Depology brand was such a positive experience and their formulations are quite different from what I am used to. The Depology Peptide Complex 10% Serum with Argireline™ was really impressive with the way it plumped up my skin and helped improve my skin texture. It’s one of the most promising anti-aging products I have tried so far in my skincare journey and this will pair really well with retinol. I see myself using this more often for skin prep before makeup since I have smile lines that cause my foundation to crease a lot. this serum will definitely stay in my routine for a while. Using the Depology Deep+Care Serum Micro Dart Patches really felt like a spa session at home. The technology behind these eye patches really stood out for me and the delivery was unlike anything I have ever seen before. My under-eye area felt more hydrated and plump after using 4 pairs of Micro Dart which is the fastest result I have ever gotten from an under-eye serum I can wait for patches and I really like the fact they aren’t messy to use and stick for a really long time. If you are struggling with dry skin like me, dehydrated, or have mature skin and are trying to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles then you should really give Depology products a try. I definitely recommend the Peptide Complex 10% Argireline™ peptide Serum to get plump and radiant skin and the Deepcare+ Serum Micro dart Patches are ideal to get rid of crow feet. FAQs How Long Do Peptides Take To Work? The effects of peptides on the skin, such as improved texture or reduced fine lines, typically become noticeable after 4 to 12 weeks of consistent use, though results can vary based on the specific peptide product, its concentration, and individual skin factors. How To Use Depology Peptide Complex Serum? Cleanse: Thoroughly wash your face to remove dirt and makeup. Tone: If you use a toner, apply it after cleansing. Depology Peptide Complex Serum: Apply a small amount to your face and neck, massaging gently in upward and outward motions until fully absorbed. Allow a few minutes for the serum to penetrate your skin. Moisturize: Follow up with your preferred moisturizer to lock in the serum's benefits. Sun Protection: If it's daytime or you'll be exposed to sunlight, finish with sunscreen to protect your skin. Always conduct a patch test when introducing a new skincare product to your routine to check for sensitivities. Is Depology A Korean Brand? Yes, Depology is a Korean skincare brand dedicated to consistently innovating and exploring fresh avenues in the ever-changing landscape of beauty and skincare. The brand's aspiration is to empower individuals to embrace their skin confidently through potent, yet gentle skincare solutions Do Micro Dart Patches Work? - What No One Tells You About Using Black Soap | Weirdskin
If you are African then you must have at some point in time heard about the million virtues of African black soap for the skin. From treating acne to brightening and healing the skin this "miracle soap" seems to do it all. But is black soap really good for your face or skin? In this article, we will cover all the ins and outs of the virtues of African black soap. Origins of Black Soap African black soap is a traditional soap made by the Yoruba people of Nigeria and other Yoruba communities in Benin and Togo. It is believed to have been introduced in Ghana by Yoruba pepper traders. Some of the common local names given to this soap are " Ose Dudu " which is Yoruba for black soap, " Alata Samina " or " Anago Samina " in Ghana which means " spicy soap" a reference to the Yoruba pepper sellers who introduce the soap in Ghana. How Black Soap is Made All over the African continent there exist hundreds of black soap recipes but the original West African black soap is made by combining water, ashes of cocoa pod leaves, or plantain leaves with palm oil. However, variations of the soap include ashes of the shea tree, coconut shells, butter, and oils like cocoa butter, she butter, and palm kernel oil. It should also be noted that African black soap should not be confused with Moroccan black soap commonly called " Beldi soap ". This black soap is made by mixing caustic potash and olive oil/pomace to form a thick paste. Properties of Black Soap The properties of black soap usually vary based on its composition. After carrying out my research here are the scientifically proven properties of African black soap. Antimicrobial Effect The anti-microbial properties of black soap come from the oils present in it that help prevent the proliferation of certain bacteria on the skin. There is no principal active ingredient in black soap that provides antimicrobial protection however some recipes are made with additives such as aloe vera, camwood, lemon powder, and honey that boost the properties of the soap. Antioxidant and Anti-aging Effects Black soap is also touted for its ability to get rid of fine lines, and wrinkles and make the skin look younger. Well, the truth is black soap contains antioxidants in the form of flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids that help protect the skin from free radicals that cause skin aging. But to keep things real, this is in no way the secret of youthfulness. Controls Acne and Excess Sebum Black soap is a natural cleanser that is commonly recommended for oily and acne-prone skin. Despite its wide popularity, there exists no scientific proof to ascertain or refute these claims. Most of the claims in relation to treating acne and reducing excess oil on the skin are anecdotal reports from individuals who have used the soap. This means that, so far the exact mechanism through which black soap works to fight acne is unknown. While a lot of people have used the soap and were satisfied by its action against acne, a lot also claim using black soap worsened their skin condition. As such, there is no clear-cut answer to whether black soap is a good acne treatment. Why You Should Not Use Black Soap On Your Face I know a lot of people swear by this soap already, but black soap may not be the savior you think it is. The soap has non-negligible side effects which depending on your skin type and skin condition may make things worse for you in the long run It is Overly Stripping Because of its high pH which usually sits in the range of 8- 9 black soap has a very drying effect. It is common to experience some tightness on the skin immediately after use. And while a lot of people think it is a sign that the soap is effective, in truth, it means your skin has been completely stripped of its natural oils. These natural lipids are necessary for your skin barrier to function properly. Black soap, therefore, cleanses the skin too much. This is its biggest flaw, as anything that can compromise the skin's barrier is damaging. It Worsens Dry Skin Conditions Because it has a drying effect, for anyone with dry or eczema skin using black soap will worsen your skin's condition. Remember that no matter your skin type , hydration remains the foundation to have healthy skin. It Can Trigger Acne and Worsen Oily Skin If you have oily skin , using black soap on your face may also be a bad idea because due to its overly stripping nature, your skin cells will constantly go in overdrive to produce much more oil to compensate for the loss caused by the black soap. This may in turn worsen your acne breakouts . Can Cause Significant Irritation For sensitive skin , black soap too could be bad news. Origin black soap is made through a very traditional process which may sometimes not eliminate impurities. Also, although natural, it does not mean it is safer as common additives introduced in the soap after the saponification process may be known allergens. This includes things like fragrances, essential oils , lime powder, camwood, etc. How To Use Black Soap Safely Black soap is a skincare product that acts as a double-edged sword as its effect on the skin depends on a lot of factors; its composition, the individual using it, climate, etc. My personal experience with West African blacks was not good. It dried my skin from hard to toe including my hair so definitely a no-go for me. However, the known benefits of this soap are non-negligible, and if you are willing to try or want to continue using it here are some tips on how to limit the damage it does to your skin. Purchase The Purest Form A lot of black soap on the market today contains lots of additives, especially in so many African countries where black soap is the new "glow soap". Skin brightening and skin whitening ingredients are usually added to the soap to lighten the skin tone and clear dark spots. A combination of such compounds in high dosages may sensitize the skin to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn, and skin and liver cancer. As such when purchasing black soap, stick to the ones with as few additives as possible. More modern versions of the soap equally contain fragrances, dyes, and essential oils to improve the aesthetics of the soap. Only, these are allergens that could trigger allergic reactions. Use As a Cleanser 2-3x Times a Week Only If you wish to stick to your black soap because you find it works best for you, I can’t stop you. However, you want to cleanse your skin without going overboard, As such, it is preferable to limit the use of black to 2-3 times a week and follow it with a gentle cleanser. Include a Lot of Moisturizing Elements in Your Routine I can not stress this enough, if you are using black soap no matter how moisturizing the brand or vendor claims the soap to be, you need to up your skin's hydration levels to avoid surprises. Make sure your moisturizer contains hydrators, emollients, and occlusive ingredients to attract and seal moisture in your skin to counteract any dryness that could come from the soap. However, if you have dry skin, eczema-prone skin, or any inflammatory skin condition my advice is to stay away from black soap. There are other skincare products that will offer you better results with less risk of irritation. Wear Sunscreen Do not forget that black soap has some exfoliating properties due to the ashes used in its production. It is also common for some additives found in the soap to cause hypersensitivity of the skin to the sun. Such ingredients include; licorice root powder, camwood, kojic acid, fruit acids, lime or lemon juice/powder, etc. Always make sure to wear your sunscreen to avoid sunburns and photoaging when exposed to the sun. Here is a breakdown of how to choose the right sunscreen . Final Thoughts So is black soap good for your face? My answer is it is not the best option for a cleanser. Although Black soap has some good properties, its drying effect on the skin, in the long run, can prove counteractive due to the potential damage to the skin barrier it can cause. Remember that for your skin to be healthy, it needs to be hydrated and moisturized properly irrespective of your skin type. Black soap is not one of the best cleansers due to how unstable its reaction is. While some may find it satisfactory, before making a decision it is also important to listen to your skin and how it reacts to products. While some people may experience reactions some others might tolerate it better. You will want to do a patch test before you apply it to the rest of your body. FAQs Can You Use Black Soap On Your Private Area? In no case should you use black soap in your private area. This soap is quite harsh and the skin on the pubic regions of the body is very thin and sensitive. Thus, presents a higher risk of irritation. Is Black Soap Best for Acne? I will say no, they are more gentle and more effective cleansers with ingredients like salicylic acid that will work like a charm. Check my top 5 cleanser recommendations for oily and acne-prone skin Is Black Soap Good for Dry Skin? Absolutely not. Its drying effect on the skin will only contribute to drying out your skin even more. Is Black Soap Good for Eczema? No, it is not recommended for eczema-prone skin as it dries. A lot of black soap's natural additives may trigger reactions. Check out my itch relief bar soap for eczema-prone skin Here's how to soothe eczema breakouts with an oatmeal bath
- 5 Habits To Adopt For Great Skin | Weirdskin
Getting clear skin sometimes may seem like a nightmare with never-ending breakouts, seasonal changes, sunburns, you name it. But it does not always have to be that hard as a few lifestyle adjustments can help switch things up. In today’s post discover my ultimate guide on how to develop a lifestyle that will guarantee you youthful and radiating skin. Why Your Lifestyle Contributes To Having Great Skin There are two main factors that influence the quality of the skin. On one hand, we have intrinsic factors; these factors refer to the natural aging process of the skin over time. On the other hand, there are extrinsic factors such as environmental influence, sun exposure, nutrition, etc. While we cannot stop the natural aging of the skin, making slight changes in daily habits can go a long way to protect the skin from external aggressions. Things like having a skincare routine , eating healthy, and exercising are all things that can contribute to the overall health of the skin. However, there are other key changes you need to implement for better results. The following tips are changes I implemented myself and found made a huge difference. Keep Your Skin Properly Moisturized I can not stress this point enough. Moisturizing your skin properly will make a huge difference in your skin game. Why? It is really simple, the skin has a barrier on its outermost layer that prevents bacteria, dirt, and impurities from penetrating the body. Once this barrier ceases to function properly, your skin becomes prone to infections of all sorts. To avoid this, it is imperative to nourish and reinforce your skin’s barrier by keeping it moisturized. To do this include in your routine skincare products that contain hydrators, that attract moisture into the skin, emollients that nourish and condition the skin’s lipid barrier, and finally, occlusives that trap moisture within the dermis and form a protect film on the skin against impurities. Be Consistent The truth is you will not get the results you want overnight. Getting healthy skin is a long process that takes a lot of commitment and consistency to achieve lasting results. As such, adopting consistency as a way of life will increase your chances of getting your skin to look the way you want it to. It took me over 7 years to understand and learn how to identify moisturizers for my extremely dry skin. Lots of skincare issues will require months of treatments before the first improvements appear. Without consistency, you might never get where you want. Stick to your daily routine and always make sure to cleanse and moisturize your face after a long day of work. Prioritize Sun Protection UV rays from the sun are responsible for most of the damage your skin will go through, throughout your life. Exposure to the sun causes the deterioration of the skin’s DNA cells and can lead to cancer, and premature skin aging. This equally destroys the skin’s barrier creating a way in for bacteria and infections. This is why professionals always recommend wearing sunscreen . If your lifestyle requires you to spend lots of hours under the sun, make sure to always carry around a tube of sunscreen spray. Or prioritize wearing covering clothes, hats, and shades when stepping into the sun. Learn how to select the best sunscreen for your skin type. Get Enough Rest It is scientifically proven that sleeping disorders have a link with dermatological skin conditions. This study revealed that people who suffer from sleep disorders are more susceptible to experiencing skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, and skin aging. Having a regulated sleeping cycle contributes to having radiant skin. Skin cells regenerate at night during deep and prolonged sleep. Interrupting this process disrupts the repair process, resulting in visible signs of aging skin, the appearance of eye bags, and dull skin. Also, consider reducing your screen time which not only contributes to disrupting your sleep schedule. Blue light emitted by electronic devices leads to skin cell shrinkage speeding up the aging process. Reduce stress as much as possible as it contributes immensely to skin aging . Stress causes a dysfunction of the immune system, damage to DNA, as well as endocrine and immune modulation – all of which contribute to skin aging. Live A Healthy Life Your skin’s condition like any other part of the body depends largely on what you eat. Your diet should include lots of fruits and vegetables that are rich in nutrients that will make your skin glow. Things like vitamins and minerals are rich in antioxidants that improve the texture and radiance of the skin. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient in the formation of collagen and brightening the skin. Other nutrients great for the skin include vitamin A and vitamin K. Stay clear of fatty and processed foods that are packed with sugar as they may lead to breakouts and dull skin. Add to this good hygiene, to prevent bacterial infections and a daily exercise routine for improved blood circulation and an oxygen boost for more radiance. Adapting these skincare tips may seem minimal but trust me they will make a big difference in the long run. Making lifestyle changes will definitely cost you less than a trip to a dermatologist or an esthetician. Appropriate skin care requires a better lifestyle as well as adequate products. FAQs What Are Some Habits To Great Skin? To achieve and maintain healthy skin, adopt a healthy lifestyle and skincare habits like eating balanced meals, exercising regularly, sleeping 8 hours a day, and sticking to your skincare routine for consistent results. How Can I Get Great Skin Naturally? Introduce more skin-enhancing vitamins and minerals in your diet via the foods you eat. Also, you can use 100% certified organic skincare products formulated with plant extracts and botanicals. What Natural Drinks Make Your Skin Glow? Drinks rich in vitamins A and C can help improve your Skin’s radiance when taken on a regular basis. a few examples include carrot juice, beetroot juice, green juice, lemon and ginger tea/juice, and turmeric tea.
